Colonel Paul Carey joined the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office in 2003 after six years with the Tarpon Springs Police Department. He currently serves as commander of the Department of Detention and Corrections. During his tenure with the sheriff’s office Colonel Carey has served as a patrol deputy, field training officer, environmental lands deputy, STAR Team deputy, Strategic Enforcement Section deputy and corporal, child protection investigation sergeant, administrative investigations sergeant, patrol lieutenant, Violent Crimes Task Force unit commander, Child Protection Investigation Division commander, Narcotics Division commander, Criminal Investigations Division commander, and the commander of the Department of Detention and Corrections Support and Health Services Bureau. Colonel Carey earned his bachelor’s degree from St. Petersburg College and is a graduate of the Florida Criminal Justice Executive Institute, Senior Leadership Program. The Department of Detention and Corrections is the largest department overseeing approximately 1,100 sheriff's office employees and an average daily population of 3,000 inmates.
