Requirements for Release of Impounded Vehicles

  • Release of impounded vehicle to registered owner:
    The registered owner must present either the title or registration of the vehicle.
    The owner must also present a valid photo state ID or a state driver license.
  • Release of an impounded vehicle to any individual who is not the registered owner:
    Any person not the registered owner of an impounded vehicle must have a valid notarized power of attorney which authorizes the person named to conduct business for the registered owner.
    The individual must present either the title or registration of the vehicle.
    The individual must present a valid state photo ID or valid state driver license.
  • Release of an Impounded Vehicle Owned by a Rental Company or an Impounded
    Vehicle Being Recovered by an Insurance Carrier:

    The rental company or the insurance carrier must prepare a notarized letter of authorization on letterhead, naming the individual picking up the vehicle.
    The representative must present either the title or registration to the vehicle. Legible copies of the document are acceptable.
    The representative must present a valid photo ID and business identification.
  • Release of Impounded Vehicles Being Repossessed:
    The lien holder must prepare a notarized hold harmless letter on letterhead.
    The lien holder must prepare a letter authorizing the wrecker/towing company to pick up the vehicle and provide either the title or vehicle registration.
    The wrecker/towing company driver must present a valid photo ID.
