PINELLAS COUNTY - On December 7, 2022, at approximately 9:00 a.m., deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded to 1st Street and 18th Avenue in Indian Rocks Beach to investigate a vehicle versus bicyclist crash.

According to investigators, 70-year-old Thomas Hines was traveling southbound on 1st Street, approaching a stop-sign, on his modified electric bicycle. A 2020 Honda Odyssey Van, driven by 68-year-old Debra Sander, was traveling eastbound on 18th Avenue. Investigators say Hines did not stop at the stop sign as he continued southbound and collided with Sander’s van projecting him forward in the roadway.

Hines was transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries.

According to investigators, speed and impairment do not appear to be factors in this crash.

The investigation continues.
