Per Florida Statute 119.071, no further information will be released that would tend to identify the female victim.

What:
Detectives assigned to the Crimes Against Children Unit have arrested a man for Capital Sexual Battery on a Child Less Than 12-years-old.

When:
The investigation began on October 7, 2020 and the suspect was arrested at about 9:00 a.m. on November 2, 2020.

Where:
The suspect was arrested at the Florida Department of Corrections Probation and Parole Services at 634 Park Street in Clearwater.

Why/How:
Detectives assigned to the Crimes Against Children Unit have arrested 48-year-old Derek Hinton for Capital Sexual Battery on a Child Less Than 12-years-old.

Detectives began their investigation on October 7, 2020, after a family member of the victim contacted law enforcement. The family member learned of the abuse after the victim had contact with Hinton in Palm Harbor.

Through various investigative techniques, detectives developed probable cause that Hinton sexually battered the victim on two separate occasions.

Detectives interviewed Hinton during his scheduled visit at the Florida Department of Corrections Probation and Parole Services at 634 Park Street in Clearwater.

At about 9:00 a.m. on November 2, 2020, detectives arrested Hinton and charged him with two counts of Capital Sexual Battery on a Child Less Than 12-years-old. Hinton was subsequently charged with violating the conditions of his Florida probation for Arson and Attempted Murder.

Hinton was transported to the Pinellas County Jail without incident.

The investigation continues.
