What:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team are investigating a two vehicle crash causing non-life threating injuries to a Pinellas Park man.

When:
The crash occurred at about 5:30 a.m. on Friday, February 9, 2018.

Where:
The crash occurred on 66^th Street North, just north of 46^th Avenue North in Kenneth City.

Why/How:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T) are investigating a two vehicle crash causing non-life threating injuries to a Pinellas Park man.

On Friday, February 9, 2018 at approximately 5:20 a.m. a citizen reported a reckless driver on 54^th Avenue North, in unincorporated St. Petersburg. The citizen advised a Chevrolet Impala was driving the wrong way on 54^th Avenue North, weaving in and out of traffic.

An on-duty Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant, driving an unmarked patrol car, observed the suspect vehicle near 68^th Street North and 54^th Avenue North. The sergeant did not activate his emergency lights or sirens, and began to follow the vehicle. 

At 71^st Street North and 46^th Avenue North, the sergeant activated his emergency lights and siren, in an attempt to conduct a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle. The Chevrolet Impala did not stop and the sergeant turned off his emergency lights and siren and did not pursue the vehicle. 

A short time later, a patrol deputy was able to successfully deploy a tire deflation device at 68^th Street North and 46^th Avenue North, but the Chevrolet Impala continued to drive recklessly. 

Still not in pursuit, patrol deputies relocated the vehicle at 42^nd Avenue North and 66^th Street North. A precision immobilization technique was attempted, but was not successful and the suspect vehicle continued driving north on 66^th Street. Deputies did not activate their lights and sirens, as they followed the Chevrolet Impala from a distance. 

As the suspect vehicle passed 46^th Avenue North, it struck a Ford Windstar being driven by 65-year-old Bernard Deins III, as he was turning left from the southbound lanes of 66^th Street North, into a gas station parking lot.

The crash disabled both vehicles and the driver of the suspect vehicle, identified as 34-year-old Antonio Trevino, was taken into custody.   

Deins was transported to a local hospital with non-life threating injuries. 

Trevino was arrested and charged with: Driving Under the Influence with Bodily Injury; Fleeing and Eluding; Reckless Driving with Property Damage; Driving While License Suspended and/or Revoked; Possession of Marijuana; Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.       

Speed and impairment are both factors in this crash.

The investigation continues.
