Traffic Enforcement Initiative

What:
Pinellas deputies are conducting a traffic crash reduction initiative specifically targeting traffic violators along U.S. Highway 19, from Pinellas Park to Tarpon Springs. During the eight week initiative, deputies will conduct strict traffic enforcement in areas with a high number of vehicle crashes and during hours of peak traffic volume.

When:
The “Education Phase” of the initiative will begin on Thursday, February 1, 2018.

The “Enforcement Phase” of the initiative will begin on Thursday, February 15, 2018, and continue until Sunday, April 1, 2018.

Where:
The initiative will be concentrated along U.S. Highway 19, from Pinellas Park to Tarpon Springs.

Why/How:
Pinellas deputies are conducting a traffic crash reduction initiative specifically targeting traffic violators along U.S. Highway 19, from Pinellas Park to Tarpon Springs. During the eight week initiative, deputies will conduct strict traffic enforcement in areas with a high number of vehicle crashes and during hours of peak traffic volume.

The purpose of the initiative is to reduce the number of traffic crashes along U.S. Highway 19. Deputies will conduct high-visibility traffic enforcement to educate drivers about safe driving behavior and will issue citations for traffic violations that often lead to crashes. These violations include but are not limited to speeding, failure to yield right-of-way, careless driving and distracted driving.

The “Educational Phase” of the initiative will start on Thursday, February 1, 2018. This phase will focus on education and the issuance of warnings.

The “Enforcement Phase” of the initiative will begin on Thursday, February 15, 2018, and continue until Sunday, April 1, 2018. This phase will focus on the issuance of citations.

At the end of the initiative, the Intelligence Led Policing Division will analyze crash data to determine the effectiveness of the initiative.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office will conduct traffic enforcement along U.S. Highway 19, continuously throughout the year.
