What: 
Detectives assigned to the Robbery/Homicide Unit are investigating the death of an inmate at the Pinellas County Jail.

When: 
The inmate died at about 7:55 a.m. on Sunday, January 28, 2018.

Where: 
Pinellas County Jail is located at 14400 49th Street North, in Clearwater.

The inmate was located inside of his assigned housing area inside of the jail at the time of his death.

Why/How:
At approximately 7:10 a.m. Sunday, January 28, 2018, 30-year-old inmate Stephen Gregory James was located inside of his assigned housing area of the Pinellas County Jail when fellow inmates alerted staff that Inmate James was not responsive in his assigned sleeping area. Detention and medical staff responded.

Detention staff called a medical emergency due to the fact inmate James was unresponsive. Medical Staff performed Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), on James. Paramedics were called and responded to Inmate James assigned housing area. Paramedics continued life saving measures.

James was pronounced dead at 7:55 a.m. on Sunday, January 28, 2018.  

Detectives say inmate James had a criminal history of drug abuse and drug related charges. There were no obvious signs of injuries on the inmate's person and no incidents of confrontation or use of force. His death does not appear to be suspicious in nature.

James was arrested on January 18, 2018, by the Florida Department of Corrections, Probation and Parole and charged with violation of probation on drug related charges.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine cause and manner of death.

The investigation continues.
