Why/How:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) are investigating a deputy involved crash in St. Petersburg.

According to investigators, at about 10:52 pm on January 5, Deputy Martin was on duty and operating his fully marked Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe. Deputy Martin was on patrol and stopped at the intersection of 62nd Avenue North and 28th Street North. Deputy Martin was stopped in the left westbound lane, waiting to turn southbound onto 28th Street North, when the westbound 2000 Buick Regal, driven by 37-year-old Anthony Hanna, struck his marked 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe from behind.

Hanna failed to stop after the crash and left the scene in the 2000 Buick. Three witnesses in a vehicle were following behind the 2000 Buick and Hanna both before and after the crash. The witnesses followed the 2000 Buick and Hanna to his home address located at 2865 61st Avenue North, St. Petersburg where he was contacted by Deputies a short time later.

Deputy Martin sustained non-life threatening injuries. He was transported to local hospital for treatment and has since been released from the hospital.

Hanna was not injured as a result of the crash.

Hanna was arrested for leaving the scene of an accident with injury/property damage and driving under the influence with injury/property damage

Hanna had Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC), of .036/.039, toxicology results are pending.

Speed and impairment both appear to be factors in the crash.

The investigation continues.
