The incident occurred near the intersection of East Lake Road and Cove Drive, in Palm Harbor.

The crash occurred at about 4:40 p.m. on Thursday, October 13, 2016.

How/Why:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) are investigating a two vehicle crash involving an off-duty deputy in Palm Harbor.

Investigators say that 69-year-old Christina Mulvaney was driving her 1999 Chevrolet S-10 truck, northbound on East Lake Road when she decided to make a U-turn. Mulvaney pulled into the left turn lane at East Lake Road and Cove Drive and waited as traffic stopped in the median and center southbound lanes of East Lake Road.

Mulvaney made the southbound U-turn crossing into the center southbound lane of East Lake Road and was attempting to merge into the curb southbound lane of East Lake Road, when she struck the rear of Deputy Derek Gregory’s marked 2010 Ford Crown Victoria cruiser. Deputy Gregory was stopped in traffic, in the center southbound lane of East Lake Road when the crash occurred.

Investigators say that Deputy Gregory was off-duty, on his way home from work at the time of the crash.

Paramedics responded and transported Mulvaney to Mease Countryside hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Deputy Gregory was uninjured.

Speed and impairment were not factors in the crash.

The investigation continues.
