Deputy Involved Shooting

***Update as of 4:45 p.m. on October 13, 2016***

Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri has released surveillance and dashcam video of the deputy involved shooting after a man shot his neighbor and shot at a deputy in unincorporated St. Petersburg on Tuesday, October 11, 2016.

The surveillance video shows the suspect, 65-year-old Larry Dennis Hoad brandishing a 9mm handgun.  Hoad is seen firing multiple shots including into his neighbor’s home.  Dashcam video of the incident shows Sergeant Matt McLane’s encounter with Hoad.

In the news conference, Sheriff Gualtieri credited Deputy Jeff Nelson for his quick thinking and heroic efforts that kept shooting victim, 30-year-old Shawn Smith, alive until paramedics arrived.  “Deputy Nelson took off his uniform shirt, bulletproof vest and t-shirt.  He took his t-shirt and stuffed it into Smith’s chest and was able to stop the blood flow.  Because of that, he [Smith] did not bleed out at the scene”, said Sheriff Gualtieri.

As of the October 13 news conference, both Smith and Hoad were in critical condition at Bayfront Medical Center.

When:

How/Why:
Detectives assigned to the Robbery/Homicide Unit are investigating a deputy involved shooting after a man shot his neighbor and shot at a deputy in unincorporated St. Petersburg.

According to detectives, at about 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 11, 2016, court processing deputies went to a residence at 4809 46th Avenue North, apartment #1, to issue 65-year-old Larry Dennis Hoad, an eviction notice.  Hoad was informed he had to vacate the residence within 24 hours. Deputies left the residence without incident.

At about 12:50 p.m. on Tuesday, October 11, 2016, deputies were dispatched to 4610 47th Way North after 911 calls came in for reported gunshots.

Detectives say that Sergeant Matt McLane responded and parked his cruiser along 47th Way North, in between 46th Avenue North and 47th Avenue North.  As Sergeant McLane exited his vehicle, he observed a male subject later identified as 65-year-old Larry Hoad, in the alleyway walking southbound towards him.

Sergeant McLane identified that Hoad had a handgun in his right hand and a rifle in his left hand.  Sergeant McLane issued verbal commands for Hoad to drop his weapons.  Hoad disregarded Sergeant McLane’s commands and instead fired two shots at Sergeant McLane, striking his deputy cruiser and penetrating the front and rear driver-side doors. After being fired upon, Sergeant McLane returned fire, striking Hoad in the torso and in the arm, incapacitating him.

Responding deputies determined that prior to Sgt. McLane arriving on scene, Hoad fired multiple shots at his neighbor, 30-year-old Shawn Smith who lived in the same triplex. Smith was found at his residence suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to Bayfront Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Deputies determined that Hoad went to a neighboring residence at 4813 46th Avenue North and fired multiple rounds into the neighbor’s house and unoccupied vehicle.  The homeowner, 73-year-old David Foreman was inside the residence at the time and was uninjured.

The investigation also revealed that Hoad fired multiple rounds at 69-year-old Allen R. Cameron who was painting at 4809 46th Avenue North. Cameron fled and was uninjured.

After shooting at Cameron, detectives say Hoad walked through the alleyway just north of 4809 46th Avenue North, along 47th Way North, looking for another unidentified person who he intended to shoot.  As Hoad walked into the alleyway, he encountered Sergeant McLane and was incapacitated.

Hoad was taken to Bayfront Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Hoad will be charged with three counts of attempted murder and two counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling.

Sheriff Gualtieri held a press conference near the scene and described how Hoad was on a “violent rampage looking for more victims” before he encountered Sergeant McLane. “We are very fortunate that Hoad did not kill a deputy sheriff”, said Sheriff Gualtieri.

Sergeant McLane will be placed on routine paid administrative leave.
