How/Why:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) are investigating a crash in Redington Shores after a man fell off a motorcycle.

According to investigators, 19-year-old Charles Wagner was driving a 1998 Yamaha motorcycle southbound in the median lane of Gulf Boulevard while his passenger, 27-year-old Robie Schuman accompanied him on the back of the same motorcycle.

Investigators say that Wagner and Schuman were approaching the intersection of Gulf Boulevard and 182nd Avenue when Wagner saw pedestrians crossing Gulf Boulevard in a marked crosswalk ahead of him.  Wagner decelerated with the intent of yielding for pedestrians in the crosswalk. For no apparent reason, Schuman stood up on the motorcycle while the motorcycle was still moving and fell to the ground striking his head on the roadway.

Schuman was not wearing a helmet and was transported by helicopter to a local hospital for what was originally thought to be life threatening injuries.

Investigators believe that Schuman was impaired at the time of the crash and this contributed to him falling off the motorcycle. Wagner showed no signs of impairment.

The investigation continues.
