What:
Detectives assigned to the Robbery/Homicide Unit are investigating the death of an inmate at the Pinellas County Jail.

When:
The inmate died at about 2 a.m. on Sunday October 30, 2016.

Where:
The Pinellas County Jail is located at 14400 49th Street North, in Clearwater.

The inmate was in his housing area located in the jail’s North Division C Barracks at the time of his death.

Why/How:
According to investigators, 58-year-old inmate Timothy Matthews, died in his housing area at the Pinellas County Jail’s North Division at about 2 a.m. on Sunday October 30, 2016.

Detectives say Matthews complained of chest pains and collapsed while in his housing area. Detention and medical staff at the jail performed CPR on Matthews until paramedics responded. Matthews was pronounced dead at about 2 a.m...

Detectives say there were no obvious signs of injuries on the inmate's person and no incidents of confrontation or use of force. His death does not appear to be suspicious in nature.

Matthews was serving a 364 day sentence at the jail after pleading guilty to a Possession of Drug Paraphernalia criminal charge on September 5, 2016.

Next-of-kin has been notified.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine cause and manner of death.

The investigation continues.
