Why How:
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office will not “sweep anything under the rug.”

Due to extensive inquiries regarding the plans for the “doggone” rug, the Sheriff’s Office has placed the item up for bid and will donate 100% of the bid to Canine Estates Incorporated, a local animal rescue.

Bidding began on the afternoon of January 15, 2015 and will close at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21, 2015.

Located in Palm Harbor, Canine Estates is a 501c3 adoption and sanctuary facility dedicated to saving the lives of abandoned, abused and injured dogs primarily from high kill shelters. They provide rehabilitation, vaccination, spaying and neutering and seek to find loving homes for all their animals.

The rug in question had a misprint that read "In Dog We Trust." The rug had been placed in the lobby of the Sheriff's Administration Building located at 10750 Ulmerton Road in Largo.

The rug was placed in the lobby for a couple of months.  The misprint was noticed by a deputy and the rug was removed from the lobby on January 14, 2015.

While there were two rugs in the lobby, only one of them had the misprint. The Sheriff’s Office has verified that the submitted proof was correct. The cost of the rug was $500. The Sheriff's Office is currently working with the manufacturer, American Floor Mats, to obtain a replacement rug.

The Sheriff's Office will update regarding the bidding.
