Application Guidelines:

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office does not hire persons who use tobacco products, and requires “no tobacco use” by applicants for a six-month period prior to application and during length of employment. Applications will only be accepted for positions that are currently open as listed in the "Careers & Current Openings" section.

Minimum Requirements Include:
•  Possess an accredited High School or GED diploma
•  Meet the following minimum age requirements
-  21 years old for Law Enforcement Deputy
-  19 years old for Detention Deputy
-  18 years old for non-sworn/ support positions
•  Must be a U.S. Citizen for all sworn positions and authorized to work in the U.S. for non-sworn positions
•  Be of good moral character
•  Subject to drug and alcohol testing
Testing Requirements Include:
Hiring for both certified and civilian positions is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation and testing which may include:
 
  • Polygraph test
  • Drug Screening
  • Physical assessment (medical and/or agility)
  • Hearing and vision screening
  • Psychological evaluation

AT ANY TIME within the last six (6) months, have you used any tobacco products, including nicotine, cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, snuff, e-cigarettes, a hookah, vaping devices or any other items containing tobacco or nicotine? This question does not apply to school crossing guard applicants (Crossing guard & PAL applicants may answer N/A).

Within the last twelve (12) months, have you possessed or used any illegal drug, including Marijuana, Cocaine, Heroin, Ecstasy, LSD, THC, or any other derivatives?

For sworn/certified applicants ONLY (i.e. law enforcement deputy, law enforcement deputy recruit, detention deputy, detention deputy recruit): Have you EVER been convicted of a felony, regardless of whether the sentence was suspended, adjudication withheld, you pled no contest, or the conviction was sealed or expunged?

For non-certified/civilian applicants ONLY: Have you been convicted of a felony, regardless of whether the sentence was suspended, adjudication withheld, you pled no contest, or the conviction was sealed or expunged within the last three (3) years from this date? NOTE: If the answer is NO, but you have a felony conviction(s) more than three years old, your application will be reviewed and considered. Please provide all the information pertinent to the conviction(s) when asked on the application.

Law Enforcement Certification Information

If you are currently law enforcement-certified in another state and wish to become law enforcement certified in the state of Florida, you may contact the Florida Criminal Justice Standards & Training Commission (CJSTC) at (850) 410-8600 or www.fdle.state.fl.us for further information on equivalency training at one of the state’s law enforcement training centers.

If you wish to attend the law enforcement training center in Pinellas County, you can contact the Police Applicant Screening Service (PASS) at (727) 864-3822 or www.policestandards.org for further information. Either CJSTC or PASS will be able to evaluate your background and previous training to determine what is needed for you to become Florida-certified.

 

Corrections Certification Information

If you are currently certified in another state and wish to become certified in the state of Florida, you may contact the Florida Department of Law Enforcement at (850) 410-8600. Make sure you have all training certificates as well as a basic recruit certificate before you call. These certificates will be used to determine the amount of training necessary to become Florida certified.

If you are not currently Florida corrections certified, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office periodically offers full sponsorships through the Corrections Academy. If accepted for sponsorship, the Sheriff’s Office will pay for your academy tuition, books, and FDLE Certification exams. Benefits for corrections certified employees include: life insurance, health insurance, dental & vision insurance, shift differential, Florida Retirement System (FRS), educational assistance, uniforms, and paid vacations, holidays and sick leave. Applications for sponsorships are accepted when the “Detention Deputy Recruit” position is posted on the “Careers and Current Openings” page.
