The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office Public Safety Cadets Program (Unit #900) offers young people the opportunity to experience firsthand the challenges and rewards of a career in law enforcement or corrections including investigations, forensics, training, and more.  Cadets interact with deputy sheriffs who serve as mentors and instructors, some of whom were once Cadets themselves.

Unit #900 Cadets are immersed in several facets of our agency’s operations and has earned national championships in several law enforcement exploring categories such as scenario-based, shooting, Honor Guard, and drill teams.

Cadet are provided opportunities to travel,  learn about future careers in law enforcement, serve their communities, provided knowledge, skills and practical experiences through education and training delivered by their mentors. Cadets build character, physical fitness and respect for the rule of law and human and civil rights.

To become a Unit #900 Cadet, applicants must be:

  • Between 14 and 20 years old
  • Enrolled in high school, home school, or virtual school
  • A good student with regular attendance and maintain a minimum 2.0 or “C” GPA
  • Of good moral character with no felony convictions (background check required)
  • Able to perform physical activities regularly
  • Able to arrange transportation to/from all meetings and training sessions (we follow the school calendar year including holidays and breaks)
  • Able to attend all meetings (at advisor’s discretion, some exceptions may be made for school events e.g. band, sports, etc.)
  • Paramilitary/boot camp style - The unit is run with a high level of expectations for behavior, appearance, physical training and responsibility level.
