The female victim was between 9 and 10 years of age when the crimes occurred. Per Florida Statute 119.071(2)(h)1 no further details will be released that would tend to identify the victim.

Detectives assigned to the Crimes Against Children Unit have arrested a St. Petersburg man for sexual battery on a child less than 12 years of age.

When:
The incidents occurred in February and March of 2019.

The suspect was arrested on July 19, 2019.

The incidents occurred at an undisclosed location in Pinellas County.

Why/How:
Detectives assigned to the Crimes Against Children Unit have arrested a St. Petersburg man for sexual battery on a child less than 12 years of age.

According to detectives, the investigation began on June 18, 2019, after a family member of the victim notified the St. Petersburg Police Department that 33-year-old Don Thompson had inappropriate sexual activity with the victim who was 9-years-old at the time.

Detectives interviewed the victim and learned that in February of 2019, Thompson had familial authority over the victim when he told her that he needed to check to see if she was still a virgin. Detectives say Thompson used an adult sex toy on the child and then sexually battered her.

The victim informed detectives that a month later, Thompson had her watch a pornographic video on his cellular phone.  

Through various investigative techniques, detectives were able to corroborate the victim’s allegations.

On Friday, July 19, 2019, detectives arrested Thompson at his place of employment.

Thompson was transported to the Pinellas County Jail without incident.

Thompson was charged with one count of Sexual Battery on a child less than 12 years old and one count of Prohibition of Certain Acts in Connection with Obscenity.

The investigation continues.
