Why/How:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team are investigating a crash involving a wrong way driver after a man crashed into a deputy’s cruiser in St. Petersburg.

According to investigators, Deputy Martin Eisner (driver) and Deputy Randall Dorr (passenger) were on-duty traveling southbound on 71st Street North, approaching the intersection of 62nd Avenue North, in their marked 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe cruiser.

Investigators say that deputies were making a left eastbound turn from 71st Street North onto 62nd Avenue North, on a green traffic light, when a 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer traveling the wrong-way, southbound in the northbound curb lane of 71st Street North, struck the front driver side of the deputy’s cruiser.

Paramedics responded to the scene and determined that the driver of the Trailblazer, 52-year-old Peter Sperico, had an extremely low blood sugar level. Sperico was transported to Northside Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The deputies were not injured.

Investigators reviewed the deputy’s dash cam video and confirmed that Deputy Eisner was driving at normal speeds in non-emergency mode at the time of the crash.

Investigators do not suspect that impairment or speed were factors in the crash.

The investigation continues.
