When:
The crash occurred at about 8:36 p.m. on March 23, 2016.

Where:
The crash occurred near the intersection of Gulf Boulevard and 65th Avenue in St. Petersburg Beach.

Why/How:

According to investigators, at approximately 8:36 p.m. on March 23, 2016, Emanuel Matalon was driving a 2003 Subaru Outback northbound on Gulf Boulevard in the curb lane approaching 65th Avenue. Anthony Logothetis was riding his bicycle with no lights, crossing Gulf Boulevard near 65th Avenue diagonally from west to east in a northeast direction.

Investigators say that Matalon never saw Logothetis crossing the street on his bicycle and struck Logothetis with his vehicle in the northbound lanes of Gulf Boulevard.

Logothetis was transported to Bayfront Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Matalon and his passenger were not injured as a result of the crash.

Investigators say that Logothetis was not utilizing a designated crosswalk at the time of the crash. Logothetis was also wearing dark colored clothing and there were no lights on his bicycle.

Investigators don’t believe that alcohol or speed were factors in the crash.

The investigation continues.
