S.P.O.T. (Sexual Predator and Offender Tracking Unit) was created in 2000 to address the growing number of sexual predators and sexual offenders within unincorporated Pinellas County. In April of 2006, the Pinellas County Board of Commissioners and Sheriff Jim Coats agreed to expand the unit’s responsibilities beyond the unincorporated areas to include all municipalities, creating a county wide unit. The goal of creating a county wide unit was to improve management practices, reduce duplication efforts by law enforcement agencies, maximize the use of human and financial resources and improve accountability.   The unit consists of eight deputies, a corporal, a sergeant, a Crime Analyst and a clerk, making the SPOT Unit one of the largest units dedicated solely to monitoring and tracking sexual predators and sexual offenders in the United States.  The mission of the S.P.O.T. Unit is to be proactive and aggressive in regards to monitoring, tracking and enforcing Florida State Statutes that relate to registered sexual predators and sexual offenders.
