Volunteer Opportunities at the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office:
Volunteering at the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office can enhance your knowledge of the criminal justice system, introduce you to interesting and knowledgeable people and provide you with the opportunity to get a first hand look at law enforcement operations. These and other exciting experiences exist within the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office through a variety of volunteer programs.
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office program coordinators will help you get started through consultation and training to insure your volunteer experience will be satisfying and fulfilling. The Sheriff’s Office recognizes volunteers are essential to the productivity, efficiency and cost effectiveness of law enforcement operations.
A member of the volunteer program must be U.S. citizen at least 18-years-old, have transportation, pass a criminal history check and have no felony arrests. Just like Sheriff’s Office members, volunteers are required to take a polygraph test due to occasional contact with sensitive material. Volunteer time requirements range from 4 to 20 hours a week. Because the Sheriff’s Office is open 24 hours a day, there are many volunteering opportunities.
Ways to volunteer at the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office:
Religious Volunteers
The Chaplain Services Program provides pastoral care and religious services to inmates at the Pinellas County Jail. Spiritual counsel, moral support and practical guidance are dispensed to those with personal or family problems. With the approval of the Sheriff’s Office Chaplain, over ninety worship services and Bible studies are provided by volunteers each week to jail inmates. Call (727) 464-6326 for more details.
Citizens Patrol
The Citizens Patrol Volunteer Program is the newest opportunity for citizens to volunteer their time with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office. As a member of the Citizens Patrol, you will have an opportunity to serve side by side with our deputy sheriffs and perform a variety of valuable services for our citizens and visitors to Pinellas County. Some of these responsibilities may include seizing and transporting found property, directing traffic at special events or around disabled vehicles, conducting vacation home checks and much more. Detention and Corrections Program Services
The Detention and Corrections Program Services Section provides assistance and support within the Bureau and community through the effective implementation and delivery of educational and rehabilitative programs and services. These services are provided to the inmate population in partnership with community resources. Services coordinated through the section focus on education, vocational training, substance abuse, and personal development. Volunteers are utilized by Program Services as tutors or facilitating classes in personal development and/or life skills. "Volunteers In Partnership" - (Volunteer opportunities throughout the rest of the agency)
The Sheriff’s Public Information Office created the Volunteers in Partnership (VIP) program in order to give citizens an opportunity to learn more about law enforcement by contributing their time to administrative and support tasks. The VIP program allows its volunteers to play a vital role in the agency’s vision to engage the community in an active problem-solving partnership. VIP not only work in the office but also go into the community to provide services.
As a member of the Volunteer In Partnership Program you will perform a valuable service not only for the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office but also for the community as a whole.
Job Requirements: May include dealing with the public, computer skills, attention to details, typing, proofreading reports and filing.

Child I.D. Program
V.I.P.s fingerprint children throughout the year in Pinellas County at special events and schools. V.I.P.s learn their fingerprinting skills from the Sheriff’s Forensic Science Specialists.
