The Sheriff’s Citizens Academy is a multifaceted educational program in which interested citizens learn about the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, how it operates and the law enforcement challenges which face our county.
The objective of the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy is to bring together a cross section of community representatives for twelve weekly sessions of interactive instruction and discussion about the agency’s operations and policies which facilitate the delivery of law enforcement services.

The Sheriff’s Citizens Academy is designed to provide members of the community with the opportunity to gain specific knowledge about the workings of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office and a general insight into the field of law enforcement. The program is informational and does not train or promote citizens to act in a law enforcement capacity. Graduates of the Sheriff’s Citizens Academy will not be certified deputies.
Increased awareness and understanding will enable participants to more effectively involve themselves in crime prevention and to promote citizen-Sheriff’s Office partnerships in their neighborhoods.
Any resident of Pinellas County who is 18 years of age or older with a valid Florida driver’s license and in good health is eligible to attend the Citizens Academy free of charge. Business leaders, civic representatives, as well as members of the community are encouraged to participate.
All applicants will be screened through a routine criminal background check prior to their acceptance into the program.
