Remove Intoxicated Drivers (RID)

What:  In an effort to reduce DUI related injuries and save lives this Holiday season, Pinellas County deputies conducted DUI checkpoints at two locations over the weekend. Results at each of the locations are listed below.

Where:  The first sobriety checkpoint was conducted at Church by the Sea located at 495 137th Avenue Circle in Madeira Beach.

The second, at the National Aviation Academy located at 6225 Ulmerton Road in Clearwater.

When:  The first sobriety checkpoint was held between 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. on Friday, December 9, 2011.

The second was held between 12:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 10, 2011.

How/Why: 

The goal of the sobriety checkpoints was to raise awareness that will help reduce injuries and save lives this holiday season; as well as enforce the Sheriff’s Office zero-tolerance for drinking and driving/drug consumption and driving.

The results for the Sobriety Checkpoint held from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at Church By the Sea in Madeira Beach are as follows:

A total of 898 vehicles passed through the checkpoint with 227 drivers diverted for assessment.The average intrusion time for non-impaired drivers diverted for assessment was 1 minute and 25 seconds.

A total of 9 subjects were arrested.

6 DUI
1 Driving while license suspended/revoked
1 Misdemeanor Possession of Marijuana
1 No Valid DL
16 Citations

The results for the Sobriety Checkpoint held from 12:30 a.m. to 3:30 a.m.at 6225 Ulmerton Road in Clearwater are as follows:

A total of 408 vehicles passed through the checkpoint with 102 drivers diverted for assessment.  The average intrusion time for non-impaired drivers diverted for assessment was 1 minutes and 49 seconds.

A total of 12 subjects were arrested.

1 Violation of Business Purposes Only Restriction
15 Citations

Sobriety Checkpoints will also be held on Friday, December 16, 2011 from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at Berea Baptist Church located at 370 Alt. 19 in Palm Harbor; and on Saturday, December 17, 2011 from 12:30 a.m. to 3:30 a.m. at K-Mart located at 26996 US Highway 19 North in Clearwater.
