What:  Deputies assigned to St. Pete/Clearwater Airport have arrested an Indiana man after he was discovered carrying a concealed firearm through the airport’s security checkpoint.

Where:  Deputies responded to the security checkpoint at St. Pete/Clearwater Airport located at 14700 Terminal Boulevard.

When:  Deputies responded to the call at about 4:17 p.m. on Thursday, January 26, 2012.


According to deputies, 57-year-old Michael Shelton of Fort Wayne, Indiana was going through security at St. Pete/Clearwater Airport. Deputies say that when he placed his bag through the magnetometer, TSA agents identified the item in the bag as a firearm and summoned deputies.

Deputies responded and confirmed the finding to be a Smith and Wesson, 9m, model 59 - handgun.

Shelton was headed back home to Ft. Wayne on Allegiant Flight 890 following a visit to Florida. Deputies say Shelton was extremely cooperative and apologetic and told deputies he had forgotten the gun was in his bag, described as a brown leather duffel-type bag.

Shelton was arrested for carrying a concealed firearm and was transported to the Pinellas County Jail without further incident.
