According to deputies, the child, 4-year-old Shayna Lydick, was in the care of her grandparents at the McDonald’s located at 650 150th Avenue in Madeira Beach. The incident occurred in the seating/table area outside the McDonald’s.

Deputies say the child approached the dog, and the dog responded by biting the child’s lip. The child’s grandfather, identified as 48-year-old Shaw Riley, then stabbed the dog twice in the neck with a pocket knife. The dog retreated from the location to a row boat off the dock.

Lydick was transported to All Children’s Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. The girl sustained injuries to her lip from the dog bite and may require reconstructive surgery.

The dog, a 9-year-old Golden Retriever named Sampson, was treated on scene by Madeira Beach Fire Rescue. Pinellas County Animal Services responded to the scene, took custody of the dog and will conduct the investigation.

Deputies say the dog owners and the child’s grandparents are known to each other. The dog owners/dog have been trespassed from the McDonald’s Restaurant.
