The incident took place in the area of 25th Avenue North and 28th Street North in St. Petersburg.

When:
The crash occurred on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at approximately 7:56 p.m.

How/Why:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) are investigating a crash that occurred in St. Petersburg last night.

At approximately 7:56 p.m. Deputy Mitchell Grissinger was on routine patrol when he began to initiate a traffic stop on a 2014 Toyota Camry in the area of 25th Avenue and 28th Street North in St. Petersburg. Deputy Grissinger activated his lights and siren and the driver of a 2014 Toyota Camry failed to stop the vehicle. The driver of the Toyota continued to drive through a stop sign when he was struck by an oncoming driver of a 2005 Nissan Sentra. The Toyota came to rest in the front yard of a nearby residence and the driver fled the scene on foot.

Both the passenger of the Toyota and the driver of the Nissan were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Deputies were unable to locate the driver that fled. The driver is described as a black male, between the ages of 20 and 30, approximately 5’7” tall, medium build and short hair. He was last seen wearing multi-colored shorts, no shoes or shirt.
