Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team have responded to a vehicle vs deputy cruiser crash. The driver was transported to a local hospital, treated and released; and subsequently arrested for DUI and DUI Property Damage. The deputy was not injured.

The crash occurred at about 12:40 a.m. on Sunday, June 29, 2014.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Belcher Road and Bell Cheer Drive in Clearwater.

According to M.A.I.T. investigators, Deputy Steven Wolcott was headed home from an off -duty detail in his 2011 Crown Victoria marked cruiser.

Investigators say Deputy Wolcott was northbound on Belcher Road, attempting a westbound (or left) turn onto Bell Cheer Drive.

22-year-old Christian Brinsko was traveling southbound on Belcher Road in the median lane in his 2005 Saturn Ion. Deputies say he was traveling with no headlights and that only parking lights were on.

Deputies say Deputy Wolcott did not see the vehicle, started his left hand turn and struck the driver’s side rear wheel area of the vehicle.

Brinsko was transported to Morton Plant Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released. Following release from the hospital, deputies conducted a DUI investigation. Brinsko was determined to be impaired and was arrested for DUI and DUI Property Damage.

Deputy Wolcott was not injured. The cruiser sustained damage to the left front area.

Narcotics apeears to be a factor in the crash.

The investigation continues.
