Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) are investigating a head-on crash in un-incorporated Clearwater.

Where:
The incident took place in the area of Overbrook Avenue and Douglas Avenue in unincorporated Clearwater.

When:
The crash occurred on Friday, May 23, 2014 at approximately 11:15 p.m.

How/Why:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) are investigating a head-on crash in un-incorporated Clearwater.

At approximately 11:15 p.m. Deputy Martin Guzman was on routine patrol when he observed a 2012 Ford Fusion driving in a reckless manner. Deputy Guzman began to initiate a traffic stop by activating his lights and siren. The Ford Fusion began to make a wide right turn on to Douglas Avenue from Overbrook Avenue driving into on-coming southbound traffic, hitting a 2010 Chevy S10 pick-up truck head-on.

Both the driver and passenger of the Ford Fusion, exited the vehicle and fled the scene. Deputy Guzman began a foot pursuit and was able to catch the driver of the Fusion who has been identified as, 21-year-old Matthew J. Bunch.

Two passengers of the Chevy S-10 were transported to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Bunch was also transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, but has since been released and taken to the Pinellas County Jail without further incident.

Bunch was charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident with Injury, Fleeing and Eluding, Trafficking in Hydromorphone and Resisting Arrest Without Violence.

The passenger of the Fusion has not been identified at this time.

The investigation continues.
