Explorers from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Post 900 recently traveled to Nova Scotia to participate in a three day Federal Canadian Youth Leadership Camp. The Leadership camp took place from Friday, April 25, 2014 to Sunday, April 27, 2014 and was held in Tatamagouche, Canada. City Police Departments and Royal Canadian Mounted Police units from Nova Scotia and Ontario Canada attended the camp including the City of Halifax, NS, the Town of New Glasgow, NS, the Town of Bedford, NS, the City of Dartmouth, NS, Cole Harbour NS, and Thunder Bay, Ontario.
The camp was hosted by the Tim Horton’s Youth Foundation and included various lectures and activities pertaining to leadership and team building. Activities included high and low ropes confidence building courses, ice breakers, learning communication skills and outdoor survival skill building. Post 900 Explorer, Alex Sisco was interviewed by the Nova Scotia Regional Newspaper regarding his participation in this integrated leadership camp.
During their time in Canada, the Explorers took time to enjoy the sights around the Halifax area and they were given the opportunity to learn about the culture and history. Educational experiences included a visit to the Maritime Museum, a historical fort, Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse, a monument observation of the Halifax Great Disaster of 1917 and a visit to some of the Titanic victim’s burial grounds.
Post 900 appreciates the coordination of the Nova Scotia Law Enforcement agencies for hosting the camp and would like to express gratitude for inviting Explorer Post 900 to participate. These training camps give Post 900 Explorers the opportunity to “build tomorrow’s leaders today.”
