Deputies responded to a drowning during a triathlon being held at Fort  De Soto Park.

Deputies responded to the incident at about 8:16 a.m. on Saturday, April 19, 2014.

The incident occurred at a Fort De Soto Park located at 3500 Pinellas Bayway South in St. Petersburg.

According to deputies, 64-year-old Donald Bautel was in visiting Florida from Michigan to participate in the “Escape from Fort De Soto” triathlon this morning at Fort De Soto Park.

During the swimming portion of the triathlon, Bautel appeared to be drowning. Swimmers in the area pulled Bautel from the water, began CPR and called 9-1-1.

EMS and Deputies arrived on scene and Bautel was transported to a local hospital via ambulance where he later died.

Deputies say the drowning appears to be accidental, possibly health related.

The investigation continues.
