How/Why:
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting a Prom DUI Awareness event at East Lake High School on Friday, April 4, 2014 beginning at 10:30 a.m. The event is a partnership between the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, Suncoast Safety Council, Students Against Destructive Decisions (S.A.D.D) and East Lake High School.

During the event, students will operate a pedal cart wearing Fatal Vision Goggles and will attempt to navigate through a coned course. The goggles provide a visual distortion to represent levels of impairment and bring the realization of the effects of driving while under the influence of drugs and alcohol.  The purpose of the event is to engage the students and bring awareness to the issues of impairment during the start of the 2014 Prom season.

The pedal carts are on loan from the Suncoast Safety Council to help provide awareness to impairment related crashes in Pinellas County.

Media is welcome to attend the event.

When To Call

In Florida, simply dialing 9-1-1 in an emergency connects you to EMS, law enforcement, and the fire rescue.

The 9-1-1 system is for emergencies only – serious vehicle crashes, critical medical situations, crimes in progress, or fire.

Do not call 9-1-1 for non emergency transportation.

If you are unsure if your situation is a true emergency, officials recommend that you let the call taker determine if you need emergency help.
