The victim is a 2-month-old male, who was known to the suspect. Per Fl Statute 119.071(2)(h)1, no further information will be released that would tend to identify the victim.

Detectives assigned to the Crimes Against Children Unit have arrested a suspect for aggravated child abuse, after the child was found to have a lacerated stomach, a broken rib, bruising and a laceration behind his right ear.

The incident occurred on Saturday, February 1, 2014. The suspect was arrested the afternoon of Monday, February 3, 2014.

The crime occurred in a private residence in St. Petersburg.

According to detectives, a St. Petersburg man was arrested for one count of Aggravated Child abuse. On February 1, 2014, the 2-month-old victim child was taken to a local hospital with a lacerated stomach, a broken rib, bruising and a laceration behind his right ear.

The victim child was in the care of the suspect at the time of the incident. The injuries were discovered when the mother returned from work.

The suspect has been identified as 24-year-old Nathaniel Zemola. During an interview with detectives on Monday, February 3, 2014, Zemola denied the allegations.

Zemola was arrested and charged with one-count of Aggravated Child Abuse.  Zemola was transported to the Pinellas County Jail without incident.

The victim child remains in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The investigation continues.
