Deputies assigned to the Sheriff’s M.A.I.T. team are conducting an investigation into a vehicle vs. pedestrian crash that killed a Safety Harbor man. Deputies are also interested in helping the family locate the man’s pet, that ran away following the crash.

The crash occurred at about 7:34 p.m. on Friday, October 25, 2013.

The crash occured at SR580 at North Bay Hills Boulevard in Safety Harbor.

According to investigators, 68-year-old Gilbert L. Greene and his wife 66-year-old Brenda Greene left Sungroves Ice Cream Shop and were crossing SR 580 from  south to north. Deputies say the couple got across the eastbound lanes of SR580 to the median, and that as they continued across the westbound lanes, Gilbert Greene was struck by a Ford Ranger driven by 52-year-old Mark G. Cavanagh.

Greene was transported by ambulance to Mease Countryside Hospital for treatment, where he was pronounced deceased at about 8:04 p.m..

Brenda Greene was not injured.

Deputies say neither speed nor impairment appear to be a factor in the crash.

Deputies say Mr. Greene was carrying the family dog in his arms as they crossed the road; and that when he was struck the dog ran away. The dog named “Rudi” is an 8-year-old miniature Daschund, mostly black and brown in color. He was wearing a red collar with a red leash still attached. Anyone with information on the missing pet is asked to contact Sergeant Keith Williams of M.A.I.T. at 727-582-6200.

The investigation continues.
