The purpose of the event is to promote pedestrian safety and teach children the best practices for walking to school each day. The program this year has also been extended to include students who ride their bikes to school. The event will help students become aware of directions, street signs, traffic patterns and good pedestrian/bicycle behavior. The event also promotes good health and fitness by giving students an opportunity to exercise each day. It promotes a clean environment, getting people out of cars, using less fuel and not adding carbon monoxide to the air. It promotes a sense of community, as it allows the opportunity for students to socialize with other kids on the way to school; and for parents to dialogue with their kids.

Deputies will be assigned to the various schools listed above to assist with traffic control and heightened visibility.

School staff, administrators, community representatives, and parents are all welcome to participate in the walk/ride with the students.

Media is invited to cover. For further information please call the Sheriff’s Public Information Office at 727-582-6221.

When To Call

In Florida, simply dialing 9-1-1 in an emergency connects you to EMS, law enforcement, and the fire rescue.

The 9-1-1 system is for emergencies only – serious vehicle crashes, critical medical situations, crimes in progress, or fire.

Do not call 9-1-1 for non emergency transportation.

If you are unsure if your situation is a true emergency, officials recommend that you let the call taker determine if you need emergency help.
