13-216 Unity Day Presentation Marks Start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Who:
Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office
Detention and Corrections Bureau
Program Services Section

What:
An opening Unity Day presentation is set for Tuesday, October 1, 2013 to mark the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The event will be held in the Pinellas County Jail public lobby. There will be representatives/speakers from the domestic violence prevention and social services community; advocacy groups; a family survivor; and the featured guest speaker will be Linda Mobley, Author of I Hate My Life: A Teenager’s Story.

The Sheriff’s Detention and Corrections Programs Services Section has coordinated the event; as well as a series of displays aimed at raising awareness on the serious and too often tragic consequences of domestic violence. The art work and materials created by jail inmates and based upon their personal experience with this important public safety and social issue – will initially be on display at the jail lobby.

When:
The Unity Day presentation will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 1, 2013.

Where:
The event will be held at the Pinellas County Jail public lobby located at 14400 49th Street North in Clearwater.

Why/How:
Displays include: The Silent Witness Project. This exhibit consists of life size red, wooden silhouettes which represents a victim who has been killed as a result of domestic violence. Elsewhere in the display are the personal stories from jail inmates about how they survived domestic violence either as an adult or a child. Many of the stories are illustrated by the inmates themselves.

Also in the display, the artwork of juvenile inmates depict how domestic violence affected or influenced their young lives. Their identities may be protected, but their message through their art is powerful.

Citizens can first view the display in the Public Lobby of the Pinellas County Jail. During the month, the display will travel to other public lobbies of Sheriff’s Office facilities so that the voices of domestic violence victims are heard in a number of areas.

The media is invited to cover. For more information contact the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Office at 727-582-6221.
