Deputies are investigating an incident in which a man was injured after approximately 10 sheets of quartz fell on him and trapped him between them and another pallet. The worker sustained non-life threatening injuries. The incident appears to be accidental in nature.

Deputies responded at about 12:10 p.m. on Monday, September 9, 2013.

The incident occurred at Pelican International located at 6140 Ulmerton Road in Largo.

According to deputies, the worker, identified as 45 year-old Sergio Alvarez, was unloading several pallets of quartz being delivered to Pelican International in Largo. The pallets were up on their side. As he released one of the pallets to unload it, the supports broke.

Deputies say the approximately 10 sheets of quartz contained in the pallet fell on him and pinned him between the sheets and another pallet. (Deputies say the each sheet weighs approximately 1,000 pounds for a total of 10,000 pounds). Firefighters from various agencies responded to extricate the man.  The process took about 30-45 minutes. Alvarez was subsequently transported by air to Bayfront Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Deputies initially responded to assist with the landing zone for the helicopter and are investigating the incident.

At this time, deputies say it appears to be accidental in nature.

The investigation continues.
