The victim is a 6-month-old female, who was known to the suspect. Per Fl Statute 119.071(2)(h)1, no further information will be released that would tend to identify the victim.

Detectives assigned to the Crimes Against Children Unit have arrested a suspect for aggravated child abuse, after the child was found to have fractures to both legs.

The incident occurred on August 15, 2013. The suspect was arrested the afternoon of Wednesday, August 28, 2013.

The crime occurred in a private residence in St. Petersburg.

According to detectives, a Pinellas Park man was arrested for one count of Aggravated Child abuse. On August 15, 2013, the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Derek Lee Adams, was changing the victim’s diaper when he became frustrated and began to squeeze the victim’s legs.  He applied excessive pressure and pushed down on the victim’s legs causing fractures below both knees.

The 6-month-old victim was in the care of the suspect at the time of the incident. The injuries were discovered when the mother took the child to the hospital due to her being fussy.

During an interview with detectives on Wednesday, August 28, 2013, Adams admitted to the allegations. Adams has been charged with one-count of Aggravated Child Abuse.

Adams was transported to the Pinellas County Jail without incident where he is currently being held with a $50, 000 bond.

The investigation continues.
