Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) are investigating a fatal crash involving a Jeep Cherokee and a Honda Scooter.

Where:
The accident took place on SR 580 near Belcher Road in Dunedin.

When:
The accident occurred at approximately 10:38 a.m. on Sunday, August 18, 2013.

How/Why:
Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) are investigating a  fatal crash involving a Jeep Cherokee and a Honda scooter. The accident took place on SR 580 near Belcher Road in Dunedin at approximately 10:38 a.m. on Sunday, August 18, 2013.

According to deputies, the driver of a Jeep Cherokee was traveling east in the center lane of SR 580 approaching Belcher Road while the driver of a Honda scooter was traveling northbound on Belcher Road approaching SR 580. The driver of the Honda scooter continued driving between stopped vehicles as he approached the intersection. The driver of the scooter then traveled between the curb through lane and right turn only lane, pulling into the path of the Jeep Cherokee. The Jeep struck the scooter and the driver of the scooter was trapped under the Jeep. The driver of the scooter was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Jeep was not injured during the crash.

The driver of the scooter was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

SR 580 was closed to eastbound traffic for approximately 4 hours during the investigation. All lanes have since been reopened.

The investigation continues.
