Deputies responded to a call in reference to an armed man. Deputies attempted to stop the identified vehicle and shot the suspect during a confrontation.

The incident occurred in the area of 119th Street North in Largo.

The incident took place at approximately 8:32 p.m. on Friday, May 24, 2013.

At approximately 8:32p.m. on Friday, May 24, 2013, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office was called in reference to an armed man with what appeared to be an AR-15 style type weapon in the area of 119th Street North in Largo. The caller identified the suspect’s vehicle as a black SUV.

Deputies responded to the area and attempted to stop the identified vehicle that was seen traveling southbound on 119th Street North. The driver pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and the suspect exited the vehicle on the passenger’s side. The suspect then attempted to jump a nearby fence. During a confrontation with the suspect, deputies shot the suspect several times.

The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Anthony Gonzalezz, was transported to Bayfront Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Deputies Smith and Douglas were not injured in the confrontation.  Both will be placed on routine paid administrative leave.

The investigation continues.
