Detectives assigned to the Crimes Against Children Unit are investigating an incident in which a 2 1/2 year old child was run over by a riding lawnmower driven by her father. As a result she sustained severe injuries. Detectives say her feet were severed at the ankle, and her hand was injured but is intact. Detectives say the incident appears to be accidental in nature.

Deputies responded to the call at about 7:33 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10, 2013.

Deputies responded to a private residence located at 560 Hollow Ridge Road in Palm Harbor.

According to detectives, 47-year-old Jeremiah Nugent was cutting the grass at their  home. He was about to park the tractor in the garage when his wife 31-year-old Nicole Nugent came out and began to wave her hands at him. Nugent thought his wife was alerting him that he was about to drive over something and he responded by putting the tractor in reverse. He continued to back up the tractor until he realized he had run over his 2 1/2 year old daughter, Ireland Nugent. Detectives say he immediately shut off the tractor engine, but the tractor continued to roll backwards down the driveway. The two attempted to hold the tractor as it rolled.

Once it came to a stop Nicole Nugent ran inside and called 911. The child was transported by air to Tampa General Hospital for severe injuries to both her legs, and injuries to her hand.

Detectives say the incident appears to be accidental in nature.

The investigation continues.
