What:
Deputies have arrested a suspect who overnight pointed a gun at a St.
Petersburg Police Officer during a traffic stop and then fled. The suspect was later determined to be in a private residence in Lealman. The suspect barricaded himself in the home and ultimately surrendered after deputies released chemical agents into the home.

When:
St. Petersburg Police Officers conducted the traffic stop at about 12:08 a.m.
on March 20, 2013.
The suspect was arrested at about 8:00 p.m. the same day.

Where:
The suspect was arrested at a private residence located at 4480 40th Street North in Lealman.

Why/How:
According to deputies, just after midnight on the 20th of March, St.
Petersburg Police Officers conducted a traffic stop on the suspect identified as 32-year-old Andrew M. Giannisis. When the officer approached the vehicle he observed a gun. Giannisis picked up the gun and pointed it at the officer. The suspect fled. St. Petersburg Officers attempted to pursue, but the suspect was able to get away.

The suspect’s vehicle was later located off of 46th Avenue in Lealman. The investigation lead deputies to the residence located at 4480 40th Street North. Deputies conducted and maintained surveillance of the home. Later, deputies were able to confirm the suspect was in the home.

Deputies obtained an arrest warrant and attempted to make contact with the suspect. When the suspect did not respond, the SWAT Team and the Negotiator Response Team were activated. The teams were activated just after 2:00 p.m..
A perimeter was set in the area. Telephone communication was established with the suspect and negotiations continued for several hours.

SWAT Team members released chemical agents into the home and within 30 seconds the suspect exited the residence through the front door.

Giannisis was taken into custody at without further incident at about 8:00 p.m. and transported to the Pinellas County Jail.

The investigation continues.
