Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash in Palm Harbor.

The crash occurred at about 11:13 p.m. on Sunday, October 7, 2012.

The crash occurred on Belcher Road just south of Grovewood Boulevard.

According to deputies, Daniel Lavoy Akins was observed operating his motorcycle at a high rate of speed and weaving through traffic in Oldsmar, heading westbound to US Highway 19. The motorcycle fled from a patrol deputy who had attempted to stop him for speeding. The deputy did not pursue the motorcycle. The motorcycle was last seen traveling northbound on Belcher Road from the area of Nebraska Avenue at a high rate of speed.

The Sheriff’s Major Accident investigators say that after passing Alderman Road the operator apparently failed to negotiate a curve in the road, and crashed. Akins was ejected from the motorcycle. He was transported to Bayfront Medical Center where he later died of his injuries just after midnight, Monday, October 8, 2012.

The investigation continues. Investigators say the crash may be alcohol related. An autopsy including toxicology tests is scheduled.
