What:  A School Crossing Guard was accidently struck by a bicyclist today as the bicyclist was trying to avoid a two car crash. This chain of events occurred just after 7:15 a.m. at a school crossing near Madeira Beach Elementary School and Madeira Beach Middle School.

When: The incident occurred at around 7:15 a.m., Monday, August 20, 2012.

Where: At the intersection of Duhme Road and American Legion Drive in the Seminole area.

Why/How:     Responding deputies say the vehicle driven by Michelle Tallman was westbound on American Legion Drive and was turning with the green light to go southbound on Duhme Road. The southbound traffic was backed up on Duhme Road due to school drop-off traffic. As Tallman turned to maneuver into the curb lane she reportedly struck a southbound vehicle driven by Kari Monefeldt, causing that vehicle to spin into the path of the northbound bicyclist, Hung The Nguyen. Hung swerved to avoid the crash, and accidently sideswiped School Crossing Guard Susan Daugherty – who received minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Deputies issued a citation to Tallman for careless driving.

Deputies say now that school is back in session – motorists should be very careful around school crossings as traffic has increased, and more pedestrians – mostly children – are out earlier in the day.
