What:
Deputies responded to an injured person call on John’s Pass after a man fell about 40 feet off the bridge onto the concrete below.

When:
Deputies responded to the call at about 10:45 p.m. on Friday, June 29, 2012.

Where:
Deputies responded to John’s Pass Bridge near the Friendly Fisherman.

Why/How:
Deputies responded to assist the Madeira Beach Fire Department with traffic control for an injured person transport.

According to deputies, the injured man, 31-year-old Joseph Schlag of Pinellas Park was fishing off the bridge. Deputies say that as he walked along the bridge, he apparently did not see an opening along the bridge catwalk and fell through, approximately 40 feet, head first onto the concrete below.

Schlag was transported by air to Bayfront Medical Center for treatment of  injuries to include skull fracture and long bone fractures.

The incident appears to be accidental in nature.
