Detectives have arrested 45 year-old Anthony Joseph Giancola in connection with the stabbing deaths of a man and a woman who were living in a group home for the hearing impaired in the Lealman area of St. Petersburg; and with the attempted murder of two other women also living in the home.

Deputies responded to a call of a stabbing at about 10:48 a.m. on Friday, June 22, 2012.

The suspect was apprehended by the Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit at about 1:06 p.m. on the same day.

The stabbing occurred at a group home for the hearing impaired located at 5100 35th Way North in St. Petersburg.

Additional incidents possibly connected to this individual occurred in the jurisdiction of the Pinellas Park Police Department and the Florida Highway Patrol.

At about 10:48 this morning the Sheriff’s Office received a call reference a stabbing incident that occurred at 5100 35th Way North. This location is a group home for the hearing impaired.

According to detectives a male victim , identified as Justin Lee Vandenburgh had been stabbed and was pronounced deceased on scene.

Three other individuals were also injured in the stabbing.  59-year-old Mary Anne Allis was transported to Northside Hospital by ambulance for treatment of life threatening injuries and was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.  25-year-old Danielle Gilbert and 43-year old Denise Rhoden were transported to Bayfront Medical Center by ambulance for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Detectives say witnesses to the stabbing incident provided a good description of the suspect; who was later identified as 45-year-old Anthony Joseph Giancola.

While information is still preliminary, detectives are investigating the  possibility that other incidents that occurred shortly after the stabbing could be connected to this same suspect. Those incident occurred in the jurisdiction of the Pinellas Park Police Department and the Florida Highway Patrol. 

The preliminary time line is as follows

The suspect is believed to have left the scene of the stabbing and made his way to the Kenvin’s Motel located at 6801 Haines Road in Pinellas Park, where two people were assaulted. The injured at this location, a male and a female have been transported to a local hospital. The injuries of the male appear to be life threatening. The Pinellas Park Police Department is the contact point for this incident.

The suspect is then believed to have proceeded to 5705-B 58th Avenue North, where he briefly spoke to people standing outside the duplex. He then abruptly left and then returned; and with his vehicle collided into three adult females and one adult male. The three females were transported to a local hospital, the male refused transport. The suspect then proceeded west on 58th Avenue, where he struck a 13 year old boy. The child sustained minor injuries. The driver then fled to the Egg Platter located at Haines and US 19, where he abandoned his vehicle and entered another vehicle and fled. The Florida Highway Patrol is the contact point for this incident.

At about 1:06 p.m.Giancola was  tracked and apprehended by the Sheriff’s K-9 Unit in the area of 56 Ave N and 66th Lane North. The suspect was  interviewed; and subsequently arrested for two-counts first degree murder and two counts attempted first degree murder in connection with the stabbing incidents in Lealman. He was transported to the Pinellas County Jail without further incident.
