The crash occured on the on-ramp to I-275.

When:  Deputies responded to the call on May 3, 2012.

According to investigators, a deputy attempted to conduct a stop on a vehicle for a traffic violation. The deputy was behind the suspect vehicle which was heading northwest on Roosevelt Boulevard at 28th Street in St. Petersburg.

When the deputy attempted to conduct the stop, the suspect did a u-turn over the grassy median and proceeded southeast on Roosevelt Boulevard and fled. The deputy initiated a brief pursuit, but then terminated it.

The deputy was subsequently advised by a citizen that a vehicle had flipped over on the nearby I-275 on-ramp and had become engulfed in flames.

The suspect in the vehicle had exited the flipped car and fled on foot.

Deputies set up a perimeter; The K-9 unit and the Sheriff’s helicopter responded to assist.

At this time, deputies have identified the suspect and are attempting to locate him. Patrol deputies are also conducting the investigation into the crash.
