Arrested for aggravated battery of a motor vehicle on a law enforcement officer, grand theft auto, fleeing and eluding, leaving the scene of a traffic crash, driving with expired driver's license, and tag not assigned.
What: Deputies have arrested a suspect who rammed a deputy cruiser during a traffic stop. The suspect fled the scene in the vehicle, crashed it into a mailbox at a private residence and then fled on foot. The Sheriff's Canine Unit tracked and found the suspect hiding under a dock. He was arrested for the various charges listed above.
Where: The traffic stop was conducted at 1405 Gulf Boulevard in Indian Rocks Beach.
The suspect was arrested at 510 20th Avenue North in Indian Rocks Beach.
When: The traffic stop was initiated at 3:02 p.m on Wednesday, October 14, 2009.
The suspect was arrested at 4:48 p.m. on the same day.
How/Why: Deputies have arrested a suspect who rammed a cruiser during a traffic stop, fled, crashed and then led deputies on a search in Indian Rocks Beach.
A deputy initiated a traffic stop for an expired tag at 1405 Gulf Boulevard in Indian Rocks Beach. Deputies say that during the stop, the suspect attempted to exit the vehicle, at which time the deputy ordered him back into the vehicle.
The suspect re-entered the car, then put the vehicle in reverse and struck the deputy's vehicle which was parked directly behind it, causing minor damage to the cruiser.
The suspect then fled the scene in the vehicle. The suspect crashed into a mailbox at a private residence located at 204 18th Avenue North in Indian Rocks Beach. Following the crash, the suspect fled on foot and deputies began to search for him. Deputies assigned to the Canine Unit and Flight Section joined in the search.
According to deputies, the suspect was eventually found hiding in the water underneath a dock located at 510 20th Avenue North in Indian Rocks Beach. The suspect identified as 38-year-old Dana Shepard of Clearwater was tracked by Corporal Robert Livernois and his canine partner Kosmo and arrested without further incident.
Deputies say Shepard had shed all his clothing except for his boxer shorts when he was apprehended.
Deputies also determined that the vehicle driven by the suspect was stolen.
