What:  The driver of a stolen vehicle was arrested after a pursuit which ranged from East Bay Drive at Belcher, south to Bryan Dairy Road and U.S. 19, then north to SR 580 - where deputies used the Precision Immobilization Technique (P.I.T) to stop the vehicle and arrested the suspect on multiple charges. Three agency cruisers were damaged, one deputy received minor injuries. The arrested suspect was also treated for minor injuries.

Where:  The pursuit occurred over major roadways started from East Bay Drive and Belcher, south towards Bryan Dairy and US 19 then back north to SR 580, east of Countryside Blvd.

When:  The pursuit took place in the early hours of 10/10/09 - from approximately 1:10 a.m. until 1:24 a.m.

How/Why:

While on routine patrol early Saturday morning, October 10th,  a Pinellas deputy sheriff ran the tag of a 2006, white Chrysler 300 in the vicinity of East Bay Drive and Belcher Rd. There were several persons seen inside the vehicle.

The search results indicated the vehicle had been reported stolen to the Sheriff's Office earlier this month, and as the deputy initiated his action to stop the stolen vehicle, the suspect driver, later identified as Dane Bailey, pulled into a shopping center where three passengers - two women and one man - left the vehicle.

Bailey reportedly fled in the stolen vehicle, traveling south then north again before being stopped by several deputy sheriffs successfully using the Precision Immobilization Technique, (P.I.T.) manuver.

Bailey was treated for minor injuries at Mease Countryside Hospital. One deputy involved in the incident, identified as Jonathan Cleary, was also treated at Mease Countryside for minor injuries. Three Sheriff's Office cruisers were damaged.

According to deputies, there was power line damage in the vicinity of Bryan Dairy and US 19 as a result of the pursuit. That is being repaired.

The investigation continues.
