What:  Pinellas County Sheriff's crossing guards and deputies will join students countywide in the 10th annual "2009 Walk To School Day" event on Wednesday, October 7, 2009.

Crossing guards and deputies will meet students at various locations in Pinellas County and accompany them along the route as they walk to school. The purpose of the event is to promote pedestrian safety, health, fitness, and community involvement.

Where:  The Walk will be held at about 25 schools throughout Pinellas County.

When:  Wednesday, October 7, 2009.

The Walk begins before the start of school. See some school start times below.

How/Why:  

Pinellas County Sheriff's school crossing guards and deputies will join students in the 10th annual "2009 Walk To School Day" event, on Wednesday, October 7, 2009. 

"Walk To School Day" is family friendly event. Each participating school has selected a meeting point and once all participants have gathered they will walk to school together. Participants are being encouraged to use their established safety walk route.

Here are start times and assembly locations for several schools:

Seminole Elementary School
10950 74th Ave. North  - Seminole
Walk Time: 7:45 a.m. / Start 8:00 a.m.
Walk will start just east of the school in a lot near the Panda Express Restaurant. 

Oakhurst Elementary
Address: 10535 137th Street North - Largo
Walk Time and Place: Meet at Publix at Oakhurst Shopping Plaza, at 8:00 a.m., and walk to school on east side of 137th. 

Blanton Elementary -
6400 54th Ave. North
Walk Time and Place: 8:00 a.m. Deputies will shut down intersection of 54th Avenue North and 66th Street for big group of students.

Lealman Elementary
4001 58th Avenue North
Walk Time and Place: 8:00 a.m. Deputies will escort the walk from 56th Avenue to 58th Avenue and 39th Street.

Ridgecrest Elementary
1901 119th Street North, Largo
Walk Time and Place: 7:45 - Walkers will assemble in Taylor Park. Deputies will escort students through Park, and across the busy intersection to school.

The purpose of the event is to promote pedestrian safety, health, fitness, and community involvement.

Dozens of elementary and middle schools throughout Pinellas County will participate in the event which will begin before each school's designated start time. Twenty-five of those schools are in Pinellas County Sheriff's Office jurisdiction.

Crossing guards, deputy sheriffs, parents and teachers will accompany children on the walk.

Other Participating Schools include:
Bauder, Starkey, Orange Grove, Plumb, Curtis, Dunedin, Garrison Jones, San Jose, Curlew Creek, Highland Lakes, Safety Harbor, Bardmoor. Check with those schools for the start times of their "Walk To School Day".
