Deputies have arrested a Madeira Beach man after he burglarized a jewelry store, a hotel room and struck a deputy and his canine partner.

Deputies responded to the burglary at about 7:03 p.m. on October 2, 2009 after the burglar gained entry into the Just a Jeweler store located at 14225 Gulf Boulevard in Madeira Beach through a window; and activated the alarm.

Upon deputies arrival at the store, the suspect fled on foot and deputies gave chase. According to deputies, the suspect then hid in some nearby bushes. A deputy and his canine partner tracked the suspect to that location and challenged the suspect. The suspect did not comply and battered the deputy and the dog with hands and feet. The suspect ran westbound towards the ocean.

As deputies continued their search for the suspect, they discovered a broken window at room #234 of the Shoreline Motel located at 14200 Gulf Boulevard and determined that the suspect had hidden inside. Deputies challenged the suspect to exit the hotel room. At first, the suspect did not comply, but eventually exited the room where he was arrested without further incident.

The suspect identified as 31-year-old Robert Wright was arrested for armed burglary, commercial burglary, battery on a  law enforcement officer, battery on a police dog, resisting arrest with violence, resisting arrest without violence, and grand theft.

The deputy and his canine partner sustained minor injuries.

An undisclosed number of pieces of jewelry and a knife were later found in the bushes where the suspect initially hid.

The investigation continues.
