How/Why: A Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputy was successful in luring two aggressive pit bulls into his cruiser by tossing dog treats into the back seat of the vehicle. The deputy captured the pair after they charged a woman and her Doberman puppy.
The deputy responded to a private residence located at 117 5th Street in Belleair Beach at about 8:57 a.m. on Friday, September 25, 2009.
According to the deputy, Carolyn Sofer was in her front yard with her four-month old Doberman puppy when she noticed two pit bills in a crouched position creeping towards her. Sofer snatched up her puppy and ran into the garage as the pit bulls were now running towards her. Sofer quickly pushed the button to close her garage. The door came shut as the dogs approached.
From inside the home, Sofer called 911 and watched as the two pit bulls circled her home looking for a way in. Sofer told the deputy that one of the dogs then jumped into her pool and the two then left.
Deputy Vance Nussbaum responded to the scene, checked on the well being of the caller and subsequently began searching the area for the pit bulls.
Moments later, Deputy Nussbaum spotted the animals and called out to them. The pit bulls came to the deputy but would not get into the vehicle. Deputy Nussbaum then tossed some dog treats into the cruiser, the dogs went in after them and the deputy closed the door behind them.
Deputy Nussbaum delivered the pit bulls to Animal Services.
Timothy Franklin Montgomery, the owner of the pit bulls had been cited in April of 2009 for allowing the dogs to run at large, Deputy Nussbaum issued that citation. |
